Week of: September 28-October 4, 2009

Parent News:
We had a busy week, with a new spelling list and we're getting to be 'quite the writers'! We like to write our words by stretching and writing the sounds we hear. Our high frequency words are also improving even though we can't 'stretch' those! Those are the hardest ones to remember because they don't sound the way they look! (click on this link) Here's a game for you to play at home!

Our greatest accomplishment this week was participating in the Johnny Appleseed festivities in the gymnasium at the school. The activity began with learning about John Chapman and his seed-planting across middle America. Most of the stories we covered, included facts and little fable, too. We decorated our bags and began enjoying the choices between 30 different activities. Fun and self-direction were enjoyed by all. Thanks for all the volunteers who came to help. The all-time favorite was the Apple Jacks bracelet. You could spot many children nibbling as they worked hard on all the centers available that morning.

HOMEWORK NOTICE:

There are still a few students who have 'no activity' on the homework web-sites. Please inform me if you want homework sent home. "COMPLETES HOMEWORK" is noted on the quarterly progress reports and it is essential to progress and learn throughout the year. I will begin sending IXL Math reports and RAZ-kids Reading Reports to your e-address. Sight Words with Samson is one that you can check the progress on anytime. Work for all green boxes for mastery and completion. Thank you to all the parents who have been so supportive during this learning period. Most of your students feel very successful and their work shows a great beginning.

1. Math Homework: IXL: Skill A.1 through A.10
Skill: Addition B.1 through B.3
2. Spelling: List 3 (all activities) Spelling City

3. RAZ-kids Reading: In order to progress to the next level, your child needs to complete every activity on their current level. Then, they will automatically progress to the next level. The home reading program (reading bags with little books that I send home) are a companion to their reading program also. Some books they bring home will be new and unread. Let them look at the pictures throughout the book before reading the words. Assist them with their reading by asking the following questions before telling them the word. (Click on this link) Scroll down to STRATEGIES, but enjoy reading the entire article.

4. Sight Words With Samson, too!!

This week marks the middle of the first quarter. Our learning continues. Thank you for all your support. We're on Week #3 for our spelling list this week, also. New words: at, did, find, found and is. Rhyming words are in red.

Our first field trip is scheduled for later in October, so I'll be asking for volunteers to accompany us. More information will come soon.

Activities this month: Fire Safety w/the Base providing a 'fire station' mock visit, Fall Festival, last Friday of the month in our room @ 12:30. Volunteers welcome. More info coming. Bus Safety video and learning. More on the content areas coming next week.

Let's have a great week, and enjoy the slideshow!
