Welcome to the last week before Winter Break!
One last POSTSCRIPT:
What a wonderful day we had on Friday! We began the day by touring some of the other 1st grade classrooms and 'perform' our Reader's Theatre rendition of Rudolph, Rudolph! We continued with our Very Successful Holiday Cookie Exchange and I was so impressed! As you could tell from the many varieties of cookies shared, it was so much fun! One student, Analena, expressed, "This is the best day of my life!". Who wouldn't say that after choosing amongest the most festive platters of sweets and dining on the ones that were left with milk? Cookies and milk made their teacher very happy, too! Thank you to all for your generosity and contributions in assisting with the goal of "visions of sugarplums dancing in their heads!"
Continue reading and working on the links during the holidays. We'll accelerate our learning and watch the magic continue in learning. January through April contains the best promise for preparing successful students for 2nd grade and future school achievement.
Enjoy the break---Mrs. Petty
Remember to: Visit the new and updated links for learning and winter break fun.
Thanks to all the parents who have helped their child make their sight words cards. Please have them practice these and 'race' theirselves during the winter break. Remember that reading these quickly helps to increase reading fluency and comprehension. These are also the words that students misspell most frequently, so seeing them spelled correctly in their books and flashcards builds writing fluency also.
NEWS FOR THE END OF YEAR 2009
We'll wrap up 2009 this week by completing our 'almost finished' projects, and cleaning up the room for a NEW Year that's just around the corner. It's been a month of math, reading, building, decorating, making and creating. I've placed new links on this post that will see your child through the long break. Do not forget to plan a time of day when your child can read their little books (keep previewing and discussing the pictures to talk about what they're about to read)and participate in the links provided for strengthening what they already know. I've seen a slight increase in the use of the MUST DO links, so if you're not on board the learning train yet, hop on and discover the greatest amount of growth to occur in First Grade during the January - April time frame. This will be the time when the magic happens for all the students.
We will be having a cookie exchange on Friday. Here are the guidelines: On Friday, end in 2 dozen homemade cookies on a disposable plate, covered please. After lunch everyone will get a new plate (complements of Mrs. Petty) and choose a cookie off of each plate until they're all collected, then we'll cover them with plastic wrap and enjoy the rest with hot chocolate. If you're able, let your child help make them, so that they can experience the fun. If you're not able to send in cookies, you may send in a non-edible treat for each student in the class. We have 16 students now, as we will welcome Isabelle to our class on Tuesday.
Don't forget to visit this web-site for new links for learning and of course, the MUST DO links such as: IXL Math, Sight Words with Samson, RAZ-kids, and Spelling City. Have a wonderful and safe break and 'keep on learning' till our return on January 4th, 2010!
Thank you, once again, for all your support!
Mrs. Petty

Excuse this public announcement:
On December 16 and December 17, PTA will sponsor a student activity called Music & More. Wednesday, Dec. 16th with be for Pre-K through 2nd grades. Music & More will be held in the MPR from 3 pm – 5 pm.
The PTA is in need of parents to provide baked goods (such as cookies, brownies, etc.), dollar donations, and parents to chaperone. They are looking for 2-3 parents per classroom to help with the event so if you can volunteer, please e-mail Jessica Jones, PTA president at aespta180@yahoo.com. Let her know that you are a volunteer from Mrs. Petty's 1st Grade class. Thank you so much!
We'll continue working on addition using the concepts introduced with the use of the 100 chart. We'll connect this learning to the place value unit with our tens and ones 'sticks' which helps to have students learn with understanding and concepts prior to introducing traditional 'regrouping' when adding sums over nineteen. I'll provide a 100 chart to your student to 'show' what they know at home. You'll find it in their reading bag along with their 100 sight words chart.
I invited everyone to make flash card for the 100 sight words. Please do this and place the flashcards in their reading bag. We will be using these during our 'free' time until your child shows mastery in January. If you don't have time to write on the index cards (please purchase these at the PX-small 3x5), let your child do it. Quick and fluent recognition of these helps to promote a higher level of text and improved comprehension in reading.
I've postponed the Reading Response Log until the winter holidays/break. Expect to see new books and their NEW RR Journal as we'll entitle it.
Please continue doing the on-line homework. We'll move to List #11 on Sight Words with Samson and Week #11 on Spelling City. RAZ-Kids continues to promote independent reading. Remember that if your child is reading at Level D or beyond, very little help should be given them in order to master the early reading strategies needed to be successful. IXL math should be continued with completion of Addition Concepts, and you may begin Subtraction Skills as well.
Once again, thanks for all the parental support this last week, with the making of candy trains and houses. I have such great students, and parents. We're down to 15 students, with the departure of 4 since November. I expect to be the teacher to welcome the newest four students of the year at anytime.
Have a wonderful week and keep up the support of on-line homework, reading and re-reading of the little books in the reading bags, making the flashcards from the 100 sight words list, and using that 100 chart. Listen to your child count outloud to 100, and then count backward. You may use the chart for visual help in the beginning, but we'll all work toward mastery w/o looking, by using the 'picture in our mind."
Always in learning,
Mrs. Petty

What a week! It was a short one, but we packed a lot of activity, learning and fun into 3 days. Thank you for your interest in the Thanksgiving Sing-Along and Turkey Dinner served in the AES Cafeteria. We had so many positive comments and the students worked very hard on hosting a nice event. We're certain to make a splash on this week's edition of the Eagle's Eye, our locally, student-produced current events bi-weekly video of school happenings, including a local AES Public service announcement. We'll probably be the 1st grade stars with our Thanksgiving Sing-Along!
The following 3 weeks in December will be packed with learning to include: Reading (of course!), Math with more addition and strategies when adding different combinations to 10. We'll combine these with the subtraction facts, as well and begin teaching strategies when completing story and word problems when using mathematics skills to solve them. CONTINUE WORKING ON IXL SKILLS. Our class has answered 10,000 problems. If your child isn't participating, PLEASE begin. It is making a huge difference for those who complete this work weekly. It is the IXL link listed on the the blog to the right. This is also a MUST-DO weekly link.
Add RAZ-kids and Sight Words with Samson to the list of MUST-DOs also.
I have 4 parent volunteers who have consented to helping out with the making of graham cracker houses and candy trains on Thursday, December 3rd from 9-11 o'clock. If you'd like to stop by and join in the fun, please feel as if you're invited. We can always use a set of extra helping hands. We will use this as a pre-activity to writing about "how to do" something, with explaining how they made their own.
Watch for the Reading Response journal in your child's reading bag this week. Your child will respond in writing to the book or books they read each night. Specific directions will be included and excellent handwriting is encouraged.
Remember, that P.E. is on Tuesday, and proper shoes and clothing are most helpful on this day.
Kudos to all parents who have nursed their child 'back to good health' and keeping them home with high fever and flu-like symptoms. We are being extremely vigilant at school with hand sanitizer, sanitized classroom sinks, table tops and washing of hands throughout the day. Please dress your child for the weather. I am insisting on them wearing their coats/jackets to lunch/recess, and out-the-door before leaving on the bus after school.
PLEASE COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING LINKS FOR ON-LINE HOMEWORK for the remainder of the year.
1. RAZ-KIDS.com Teacher Username: ewpkids
2. Sight Words with Samson: Username and Password required-please write me if you need it again.
3. IXL Math: Go to link on right of post and follow the directions posted: Username and password required (write if you need these again)
4. Spelling City: Week #10 Search by teacher, or list name on web-site link
Others, if you like! There are many links under the MUST-DOs-so have fun after you've done the required ones and written in your Reading Response Log.
Have a great week. Mrs. Petty

ATTENTION: PLEASE SEND IN YOUR NOVEMBER BOXTOPS FOR EDUCATION ANYTIME FOR THE NOVEMBER COUNT. THANK YOU!
Have I said thanks for all the efforts on the Family Project ABC BOOK? If not, accept this great big THANK YOU! What a pleasure its been to hear your child read their book and share with their friends. We've laughed 'and oo-oo-oo-ed' and 'aw-aw-aw-aw-ed" at them! We have four more to enjoy. Thank you so much. These made us so happy!
NO SPELLING THIS WEEK!
Thank you so much for your responses to the Thanksgiving Sing-A-Long and lunch in the AAFES Cafeteria this coming Tuesday.
PLEASE STOP BY THE ROOM AND PICK-UP YOUR LUNCH MONEY BEFORE GOING TO THE GYM!
Remember to enter the gym at 10:40 (Ms. P will be teaching up to that time), and after the sing-a-long, we'll move directly to the cafeteria @ 11:00 for our Turkey dinner and trimmings. Many thanks to Gabe, the cafeteria manager, for making this possible for us. Thanks to the 2nd grade for changing their lunch time with us, also! Teamwork is such an important part of working in a school.
This is another short week and I'll load up your child's reading bag for use at home to read over the long Thanksgiving week-end. Make certain you review your prompts for supporting the solving of unknown words throughout their books. We're working on addition to 10, but 'shaking' 2 color-sided plastic beans to discover all the many combinations, or fact families for each sum. Here's an example of the '7' facts:
1+6=7 6+1=7
2+5=7 5+2=7
3+4=7 4+3=7
0+7=7 7+0=7
The students are becoming quite proficient at this and the goal is to make them see, know and mentally compute quickly the different sums; then apply them to word problems in the context of addition and subtraction. Please check out this link on fact families, where it shows how addition and subtraction are reciprocal operations.
I am in need of classroom volunteers on the morning of Thursday, 3 December from 9-11 a.m. We will be making graham cracker houses and candy trains that morning. The more parents I have, the easier it becomes. We will use this activity as a springboard to write instructions on how we made our houses and trains. If anyone cares to bag the candy for this project, I'll bring it to school and you can take it home to organize it all into zip-locs. We'll use the stories of the Gingerbread Baby by Jan Brett and The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg.
Watch for a reading response journal in their reading bag in the month of December. Your child will begin writing about 'what they read' at home each night, whether it's on RAZ-kids, or a hard copy book sent home from our leveled reading library at school. Please encourage appropriate sentences, with correct capitalization & punctuation. I'll include instructions inside the front cover of the journal to clarify.
Best wishes for a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving break. I am so very thankful for supportive parents, a great school to work in, and my opportunity to teach your children. They are so sweet and precious. Keep up the work on the computer web-sites and reading at home.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Weekly Update
We had popcorn delivered to our room by the PTA Popcorn Lady! We won for the 1st grade team. Yeah for us and thanks for all the snipping done withthe Box Tops for October!!
DID WE TELL YOU, Mom & Dad? Our class was the top BOX TOP collector for 1st grade for the month of October! We were all so excited that Mrs. Petty did a cheer for us! Keep on collecting and send them in at the end of each month. Yeah-we REALLY want a popcorn party!!! Pop, Pop, POP!
Don't forget to bring your completed, published ABC books into school this week! I'm so excited to hear you 'read' them to the class!
Well done, parents! We completed our conferences and will report 100% participation. I hope the information we shared with each other on your child's progress and 'next steps' is helpful in attaining the educational benchmarks in the near future and throughout the rest of the year. Specifically speaking, we're looking at 'stepping up' fluency and text level, becoming fluent with problem solving, addition/subtraction facts with developing mental computation, and improving our written compositions through better sentence construction, with appropriate spelling, handwriting, and overall quality of writing. Thank you for all your continued support.
SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Please plan to attend the Thanksgiving Sing-Along/Lunch, on Tuesday, 24 November at 10:40 in the gym. Please enter the gym after the P.E. class is dismissed, and enjoy the program. Afterward, we'll move into the AES Cafeteria to enjoy the AAFES Thanksgiving Dinner with the class. Please send in your adult lunch count, with $5.00 for each participating Mom and/or Dad in an envelope marked with your name. Our cafeteria Manager, Mr. Gabe, guarantees a delicious dining experience for us on that day. Send in on or before this Wednesday, 18 November.
Continue to read 'with' and 'to' your child for evening homework. Continue with the MUST DO homework links and help monitor Quiz-taking on RAZ-Kids Reading and IXL Math. Continue to use the links on the right side of the Class Blog, by rolling your cursor over the menu of many activities to use for learning and enjoyment.
Once again, thank you for your efforts and support demonstrated this past quarter. Success for all students to prepare for future learning is what we're all working toward.
Welcome back to a full week of school!
Mrs. Petty

Farewell to Presley and Xander. Their last day was Wednesday and we wish them well in the move back to the U.S. We welcome a new student, Cody, to our room. We're glad you're with us, Cody!
Well, here's 3 cheers to the Family Project of making your ABC books. I can't wait to see what everyone has created. The students came back the first day after the assignment was given and seemed very excited. Thank you for your support. This is a very 'short' week. We'll meet in class for 2 days, on Monday and Tuesday, then have the rest of the week off. I'm looking forward to seeing you on Thursday for conferences, and the Wells family on Friday morning for theirs. They've grown a bunch and learned so much, but have so much left to accomplish.
Very quickly: along with your ABC book, please revisit the links, since I won't be changing much of them. NO SPELLING LIST THIS WEEK, it's just too short. We'll be working on our Thanksgiving presentation, and readying ourselves a little more on our 1st Reader's Theatre presentation: The Little Red Hen. This gives everyone a chance to practice fluent reader in a story-like environment, which includes using appropropriate expression, phrasing and confidence. We'll also be making our own 'costumes'! Should be fun and revealing :oD
Continue with the IXL Math, RAZ-Kids Reading, Sight Words with Samson Lists 1-7 (repeat and review all lists). Don't forget about the "little books" in the READING Bag, also.
Once again, you're welcome to bring their ABC books to school as soon as they're completed. Please send them in an appropriate bag, to protect them from the elements!
Have a wonderful week and see you soon!

News Release: You received your Family Quarterly Project directions in the take home folder today. This project is due by 19 November, but it can be completed and sent in before that date. Please work to have a quality project and spend quality time together. You may use resources from on-line, magazines, your child's own drawing, etc. I did send an ABC book home with your child today, to show you an example of an ABC book. Remember to choose a theme or topic for yours, and stay with the chosen one throughout the book. Involve the entire family and let your child guide the contents. They will have an opportunity to 'read' and present their book to their peers. Thank you for your time and effort. November has many days off of school, so enjoy the time together and produce a great book. Remember, a page for each letter of the alphabet. Thank you!!!!
P.S. You can let up on the on-line homework while working on this project together!
Welcome back to the Weekly Post on our class blog. Time seems to be passing quickly and as we move into November, the work we perform together, as partners in your child's education is more important than ever. I am amazed at the progress in reading by the students. Each morning, as they arrive in the classroom, they hang up their coats and backpacks, remove the "READING BAG" and participate in SSR (Sustained 'Silent' Reading) for 10-15 minutes right before the morning announcements and pledge. Our room is buzzing with readers and I've just got to take a movie and post the results! It's such a pleasant sight and becomes even more important as we move into the second quarter of the year. Whether they're working on fluency, re-reading, checking the tricky parts with their finger, or sailing through the books that they've read over the last 3-4 days, this helps to make the difference on feeling part of a community of learners. Thank you to all the moms and dads who spend time listening, prompting, monitoring, and caring. Please don't forget to read those library books TO your child, also!
We enjoyed many of the hand & home-made treats at our Fall Festival, which basically consisted of themed activities around fall and spiders, but were really more reading, writing, and math activities connected to learning standards. Of course, included in that were gross motor activities on their favorite section of our huge playground outside our room. Other than playing Tarzan on a low-hanging branch and literally 'tearing off' a section of the tree (needed to be trimmed anyway :o), so much fun and learning was had on that day.
Once again, check out the adjusted links at the side of this post, continue with the MUST DO links and explore the others. I appreciate your immediate response to conference confirmations and look forward to the 12th and 13th of November.
Continue to collect Box Tops for Education labels, wearing appropriate clothing based on the weather, and monitoring their learning with the links. There are occassional problems with computer access for some of you, but continue to read the little books in the reading bag each night. Promote independence and use the parent prompt sheet for ideas on how to help when your child comes to difficulty.
This Wednesday, the 4th, we will farwell two students as they PCS to the United States. We'll miss Presley and Xander. We wish you the best of luck in your new locations and hope to hear from you after you get settled.
Remember, these no-school dates this month: Friday, 6 November:(teacher work day), 11, 12, & 13 November: (Veteran's Day, and Parent Teacher Conferences), 26-27 November: (Thanksgiving Holiday). Because of this shortened month, your vigilance on reading is imperative to sustain their growth and further progress. Homework will be an essential 'bridge' to sustainment of skills and moving through the curriculum, in spite of all the days off.
Happy November! Check out the links for the week--

26 October-1 November 2009 Riddle of the WEEK:
Who said this all day last Thursday? "Quack, quack!" Answer: Mrs. Petty's students, and parents who went to STRADELLA'S!! Thanks to all 8 parents who showed up to chaperone. It was a success, but we certainly got wet. We enjoyed our hand decorated cake and Franco, the baker, won our hearts with his talent and charisma. We'll definitely be ordering our Italian desserts from him in the future. The cake was yummy!

Check out the updated links this week, and remember our Fall Festival on Friday, 30 October. We're staying away from nuts or nut products in our treats, and remember that you can also send in non-food items, too. Please send in items or deliver them to the classroom before 11 a.m. Friday. We have 18 students and we'll make our own treat bags. Most will be taken home, due to the lack of time in the afternoon. If you're not able to participate this time by contributing something, that's OK. You can help out on another upcoming event this year in the future:o)
Remember this, also: AES Spirit Week: Monday- Friday--26-30 October Monday: Crazy Hat Day Tuesday: Silly Sock Day Wednesday: Inside Out Day Thursday: Tye Dye or Tie Day Friday: Red, White, and Blue Day This event is sponsored by AES Student Council. Even though we don't have active representatives from 1st grade, we're invited to participate. It's voluntary, so participate if you like.
PLEASE continue to be valiantly involved in your child's reading and homework efforts. You'll all reap huge benefits and have fun together. Watch this message from our DODDS-Europe Director about the importance of continuing to read TO your child.
Last, but certainly not least, remember to return the bottom portion of the Parent-Conference Appointment form to confirm our time to meet on 12 November. Have a wonderful week.

Well, we're working through October and getting used to the 'cold'. Thanks for sending in great jackets, hand covers, and hats this past week. Remember to dress for the weather on Thursday for our walking field trip.
Our class just surpassed completion of over 5,000 math questions on IXL. Congratulations, and many of the students are showing mastery in the skills they're working on. Please explore the new, but extra-time links if there's time. The numbered activities under the starred (extra) links are essential for Reading, Math, and Spelling progress. Thanks for your patience in using this type of forum for homework. During parent conferencs we'll review the progress of these tools for your student.
Reading the little books each night at home is essential. We have certain benchmarks for 'staying' ON level for first grade throughout the year, in order to be fully ready for 2nd grade and beyond. Meeting these standards are important for your child as you address the "NEED TO READ" every evening. I am sending home a prompt sheet for you to read and use during the read to mom/dad time in the evening.
Have a great week, and once again, thank you for all your support. See a few of you at the Study Trip on Thursday!

Activities of the Week:
We're collecting 142 ounce empty detergent boxes with the plastic handles. We need 20 of these, so let your friends know, too! I have the first one saved. We'll use these for our "READ TO SELF" part of our Language Arts Block. Thank-you!
Wednesday, 14th: Individual Pictures 12: 15 p.m. Please send in picture money NLT Wednesday Morning. Thank you!
Thursday, 15th: Scholastic Book Orders Due. Please package money in a labeled envelope with completed book order forms. Return earlier than Thursday, if possible.
Every Day: Complete homework daily, collect BOX TOPS 4 EDUCATION, and read those little books!!
AND..........Begin gathering up those 'older' well-loved books for our 1st classroom book swap. We'll make a display of everyone's donations and your child can exchange their books, for other books of interest. We're going to try to do this every quarter, so get ready for the first book swap at the beginning of November. More information to follow soon!
Now on to the 'NEWS OF THE WEEK"!
I'll begin assessing for the end of first quarter on reading level, known high frequency words, a few math skills, spelling progress, and collect some writing samples. It will be very nice to meet with everyone in early November, to discuss our 'next steps' in your child's learning progress.
We had a lot of activity this past week. We enjoyed the Air Force Services/USO production of "SESAME STREET LIVE", had Dr. Walker and Mr. Albrecht(District Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent) make a personal visit to our classroom. Even Mrs. Hiyama, our principal, stopped by to speak with a small group about all the things they're doing, learning and how our classroom 'works'.
Special Annoucement:
We're looking forward to our 2nd class celebration on Friday, 30 October at 11:55-12:40 a.m. in our classroom. We don't have much time, but it will be fun and festive. Our Fall Festival will include treats and a game celebrating the season of fall time. Parents, you're welcome to send in a treat on Friday morning with apple, pumpkin or fall-themed items. We'll decorate a special bag, enjoy some at school and take the rest home. Remember, NO NUTS or NUT-Based Products FOR OUR CLASS DUE TO ALLERGIES. Yes, sweets & candy are accepted! Other ideas: stickers, a coloring page for everyone, or something else clever and creative. If you're not able to share this time, just wait for the winter, or spring occasions! Involve your child in this! We have 18 students and one tall teacher :o)
Thank you for all your support!

Weekly UPDATE
Welcome to October!
We're working our way through our second complete month and 'picking up the pace" as we go. Most students are beginning to progress much more on their homework endeavors. We've had several move to the next guided reading level in class and on the homework web-site, and others have progressed nicely through lots of practice on the IXL Math problems with a total of 5 top students on their counting and addition skills so far. Hop on board the HOMEWORK TRAIN and see your child soar!
Mark your calendars with the following 'NO SCHOOL for Students Days': Friday, October 9th (Teacher Inservice), and Monday, October 12 (Columbus Day). Have a wonderful 4 day weekend! We'll having our Weekly Spelling Test, List #4, on Thursday, so make certain you practice your Spelling City words before Thursday morning.
We'll work on greater than, less than, and equalities this week. This lays the foundation for counting up from the greater number when completing addition problems. So keep counting up and on from random numbers between 1 and............100. We're also gaining more confidence with place value including ones, tens and hundreds. So....... ask your child how many tens in 70, 80, 20, 10, 40, 30, 50, 60, etc. Then mix it up with random numbers between 10-99, to see if they can tell you the value of both the ones and tens columns.
We're already half-finished with the 1st quarter. Hopefully you're seeing the progress that your child has made in school thus far. It will be exciting to meet for conferences in early November.
We're also looking forward to our 2nd class celebration on Friday, 30 October at 11:55-12:40 a.m. in our classroom. We don't have much time, but it will be fun and festive.
Mrs. Petty
p.s. Please send in your child's permission slip & Euro for the Stradella's Study Trip Wednesday, 21 October. If you've already sent in the $ and the permission slip, thank you very much!

Parent News:
We had a busy week, with a new spelling list and we're getting to be 'quite the writers'! We like to write our words by stretching and writing the sounds we hear. Our high frequency words are also improving even though we can't 'stretch' those! Those are the hardest ones to remember because they don't sound the way they look! (click on this link) Here's a game for you to play at home!
Our greatest accomplishment this week was participating in the Johnny Appleseed festivities in the gymnasium at the school. The activity began with learning about John Chapman and his seed-planting across middle America. Most of the stories we covered, included facts and little fable, too. We decorated our bags and began enjoying the choices between 30 different activities. Fun and self-direction were enjoyed by all. Thanks for all the volunteers who came to help. The all-time favorite was the Apple Jacks bracelet. You could spot many children nibbling as they worked hard on all the centers available that morning.
HOMEWORK NOTICE:
There are still a few students who have 'no activity' on the homework web-sites. Please inform me if you want homework sent home. "COMPLETES HOMEWORK" is noted on the quarterly progress reports and it is essential to progress and learn throughout the year. I will begin sending IXL Math reports and RAZ-kids Reading Reports to your e-address. Sight Words with Samson is one that you can check the progress on anytime. Work for all green boxes for mastery and completion. Thank you to all the parents who have been so supportive during this learning period. Most of your students feel very successful and their work shows a great beginning.
1. Math Homework: IXL: Skill A.1 through A.10
Skill: Addition B.1 through B.3
2. Spelling: List 3 (all activities) Spelling City
3. RAZ-kids Reading: In order to progress to the next level, your child needs to complete every activity on their current level. Then, they will automatically progress to the next level. The home reading program (reading bags with little books that I send home) are a companion to their reading program also. Some books they bring home will be new and unread. Let them look at the pictures throughout the book before reading the words. Assist them with their reading by asking the following questions before telling them the word. (Click on this link) Scroll down to STRATEGIES, but enjoy reading the entire article.
4. Sight Words With Samson, too!!
This week marks the middle of the first quarter. Our learning continues. Thank you for all your support. We're on Week #3 for our spelling list this week, also. New words: at, did, find, found and is. Rhyming words are in red.
Our first field trip is scheduled for later in October, so I'll be asking for volunteers to accompany us. More information will come soon.
Activities this month: Fire Safety w/the Base providing a 'fire station' mock visit, Fall Festival, last Friday of the month in our room @ 12:30. Volunteers welcome. More info coming. Bus Safety video and learning. More on the content areas coming next week.
Let's have a great week, and enjoy the slideshow!

Parent News
We're well on our way and working toward smooth transitions and improved 'protocal' for center rotation, completing our morning work and small, guided reading daily with all those little books being sent home to read. We've had our first spelling assessment and all the students are improving in their 'phonemic awareness' when reading and working with words during spelling and writing activities.
Our class is a growing and changing mini-community with 19 different learners who have become friends, learned to work together, help each other, play, eat and learn in our classroom.
Thanks to those parents who have assisted their child in using this web-site to locate their homework tasks. Students should be visiting all the links throughout the week and completing the assignments as listed, as new assignments are posted weekly. Progress in the following
We'll go to the computer lab for the required orientation, and log-in with a lengthy Username (elizabeth.petty.class) and Password (1234Q!wer) for the first time. We've been practicing this at a center this week, and we're hoping for our weekly time in the lab to be constructive. Thank you to Mrs. Littleton for volunteering as an assistant every Thursday in the 1st floor lab! As you can see, with the school account and homework links' usernames and passwords, your child will become the 'master' of their own UN and PWs. We will also begin to use the COWs in our own homeroom at school. This acronym stands for Computers on Wheels!
Practice this at home: Username: elizabeth.petty.class
Password: 1234!Qwer
ALL CASE SENSITIVE ;o)
All the other volunteers: I'll be sending out more information this week via e-mail!
Almost everyone has logged into most of the homework sights on our class blog . (Click on this link). I will soon add a math site for the required links. Required links include: RAZ-kids reading, Sight Words w/Samson, Spelling City, and our soon-to-be math sight. Please pay close attention to the weekly assignment and do not exceed the expectations as these are weekly assignments.
Here's little slide show of our spelling/name activities this week:

1. First and foremost: Go on a rock hunt. Bring your favorite and most interesting rock to school to add to our class Rock Collection. Is it big or little, round or square, light or heavy, and what color is it? What else can you tell the class about your rock?
2. Also, bring back your Take Home Reading Bag with books inside, to school everyday. Make certain your child reads the book(s) every night and you sign the reading log.
This should be an exciting year and we're hoping that you'll use this blog as a way to connect with your child's happenings at school.
Thank you for attending the Open House, on Friday, September 4th. As you could tell, your student knows the way around and has done a fantastic job acclamating to the new classroom and surroundings!
I also appreciate your attendance at the 1st Grade Parent Orientation on Thursday, 10 September. We're now warmed up, informed, assessed, and ready to fully participate in all our learning for the year.
I would also request that you return the Student Information Sheet(s) as soon as possible. Remember that my e-mail address at school is:
elizabeth.petty@eu.dodea.edu.
Take care and stay in touch. Please do not communicate in writing through postings on this blog. Pleae use my school e-mail address to keep in contact with me and ask any questions you may have throughout the year via e-mail, note, or telephone calls. Many of your questions can also be answered on the school web-site under HANDBOOK. Please place the school link in your favorites on your home computer.
Once again,
Let's have a great year!!!
Love,
Mrs. Petty
